Kenan Malik, självcensur och identitetspolitik

Sakine Madon tipsar i dagens Expressen om den brittiske forskaren Kenan Malik. Kenan är vänster och samtidigt kritisk mot mycket av den politik som sker i mångkulturalismens namn. Jag blev tyvärr inte inbjuden till det seminarium som hölls med honom härom veckan. Synd, för jag har följt Kenan Malik sedan jag läste hans bok The Meaning of Race i samband med min master-uppsats i IMER runt sekelskiftet. Redan då ifrågasatte Kenan Malik om det går att förena en politik för jämlikhet med en politik för pluralism.

Mindre känt i Sverige är att Kenan Malik under de senaste åren gjort sig känd som en förkämpe för yttrandefrihet och mot olika religiösa gruppers krav på särbehandling. Ett skrämmande och aktuellt exempel är att Index of Cencorship, som skriver på sin hemsida att de är Britain’s leading organisation promoting freedom of expression, själv bedriver självcensur. Kenan Malik är styrelseledamot i organisationen och har öppet uttalat sig mot beslutet.

Index on Censorship has in recent years chronicled many instances of what we’ve called ‘pre-emptive censorship’: the willingness to censor material because of fear either of causing offence or of unleashing violence. From the Deutsche Oper cancelling a production of Idomeneo to Random House dropping The Jewel of Medina to Yale University Press’s refusal to publish the cartoons in Jytte Klausen’s book, the list is depressingly long. It is a development that, writing in the magazine last year, I described as ‘the internalization of the fatwa’.

It is both disturbing and distressing to find Index on Censorship itself now on that list. I profoundly disagree not just with the decision to censor the cartoons but also with the reasons for doing so: that publication may have endangered staff and was ‘unnecessary’ and, indeed, would have been ‘gratuitous’.
